How to Clean Your Car Headlights

Car headlights are exposed to dirt, debris, and bugs, so they can get pretty dirty quickly. Soiled headlights don't shine as bright, which can become very dangerous for those who have to drive in very dark areas where there are not a lot of street lights. Here are some instructions on how to clean you car's head lights.

What you will need:

  • Masking tape

  • Headlight polishing compound

  • Micro fiber cloth

  • 1000 Grit wet/dry sanding paper

  • Paste car wax

  1. Wash your car to remove surface dirt.

  2. Apply masking tape around the headlights.

  3. Apply some polish directly onto the lens and use a microfiber cloth to polish in a circular motion. It usually takes about ten minutes to completely polish the headlights so take your time.

  4. After soaking 1000 grit wet/dry sand paper in cold water for ten minutes, sand the headlights in straight strokes. Make sure that the surface is wet while you are sanding. Sand until discoloration and scratches have completely disappeared. While sanding, dry the surface every now and then to check the uniformity of the sanding. Be sure to wet the surface before sanding again.

  5. After sanding, clean and dry the area thoroughly.

  6. Take your microfiber cloth and hand polish again. You won't have to do this for long, as it is only for finishing touches.

  7. Clean all remaining polish off your headlights completely.

  8. Wax headlights with a paste car wax. This keeps acid rain, dirt and road salt from ruining the headlights.
