How to Clean a Coil on a Coleman AC Unit
Coleman air conditioning units are a little different than other units. These units have a split coil system design, meaning they have a coil inside and a coil outside the unit. Proper care and cleaning of these units takes a little time to complete. Annual cleaning of the coils is necessary to ensure proper function throughout the summer months.
Things you’ll need:
- Garden hose with pressure nozzle
- Screwdriver
- Broom
- Vacuum
- Turn off the electricity to the unit by shutting off the breaker. It should be marked by an AC unit label. Make sure that the unit has no power before beginning this process.
- Sweep away any debris or leaves that have accumulated in the outside coils.
- Open the unit by removing the screws that are holding the top fan guard into place. Also, remove the screws that are holding the access panel in place. This will give you total access to the inside of the unit.
- Vacuum the inside coils using the brush attachment. These coils are delicate and cannot take a lot of pressure or they will bend. Make sure that all dust has been removed from this part of the unit.
- Replace the access panel using the screws you removed earlier.
- Using the hose spray nozzle, start to spray the outside panel off. To eliminate debris accumulating inside the unit, spray from the inside to the outside. This will clean the second set of coils on the outside of the unit.
- Screw the fan guard back into place when the unit has dried completely.
- Restore power to the unit by switching the breaker back on.
