How to Clean a Flat Roof
Flat roofs are often used in the metropolitan areas in many architectural styles for business and residential buildings. Most flat roofs have the tendency to collect water from rain, which often leads to problems such as algae build up and staining on the roof. However, the flat roof can be cleaned in a few simple steps.
- Remove any standing water from the top of the flat roof building that may have been acquired through rainfall. Get rid of leaves and debris by using a large push brush to push away any water and debris that may have collected on the roof. If trees exceed the height of the flat roof then it will be extremely important to clean often to eliminate the chances of staining.
- Protect all of the landscaping around the home, including the soil and plants. The plants need to be protected because some of the cleaning solutions that will be used to clean the flat top will contain bleach or chlorine solutions which can kill any plant life that it comes in contact with. When cleaning the flat roof, instead of pushing the water off the side of the roof try to collect the water containing the chemical and dirt contaminants and dispose of the water properly through a sewer or drainage opening.
- Replace all the shingles that have been worn or tethered down. Shingles often crack due to the heat and humidity of the local climate, and may fall apart when coming in contact with the chemicals associated with washing the flat roof. Replacing the shingles will rid the patches of hot beds of mold and fungus growth.
