How to Clean a Stain Off Vinyl Flooring

Vinyl flooring is often found in kitchens and bathrooms. While vinyl is very durable it can collect stains because of its porous nature. Cleaning a stain off vinyl flooring may seem impossible, especially if regular moping has not lifted the stain; however, with the right products the stain will come up easily.

  1. Saturate the stain with ammonia. Open windows in the area before using ammonia to avoid breathing the fumes. Ammonia fumes can be toxic. Never mix ammonia and bleach! Pour the ammonia directly on the stain and let sit for 15 minutes.

  2. Rinse the ammonia with a solution of 1 cup of vinegar to 1 gallon of water.  This will help release the stain and neutralize the ammonia. Use a rag or mop to wipe away the ammonia.

  3. Use WD-40 on tough stains. Spray the WD-40 directly on the stain and let it sit for 10 minutes. Rub the stain with a damp rag. WD-40 works great on scuff marks as well.

  4. Pour a gentle detergent or floor cleaner on the stain and scrub with a nylon brush. A nylon brush will not scratch the surface of the vinyl. It might take a bit of elbow grease to lift the stain but it will work. Scrub in a circular motion.

  5. A great way to help repel stains is to wax the vinyl flooring. Purchases waxes specifically designed for vinyl and apply as directed. The vinyl wax will give the floor new luster and help keep it free of stains by not allowing the spilled item to penetrate the pores of the vinyl.
