How to Clean an Armstrong Furnace
In order for an Armstrong furnace to run in top condition, regular cleaning maintenance will be necessary. Keeping the components of an Armstrong furnace clean will ensure the furnace will last longer while maximizing the heat output, so costs are kept low. Cleaning an Armstrong furnace is a simple task that can be completed by most home owners.
What You’ll Need
- Shop vacuum
- Rubber gloves
- Liquid dish soap
- Bucket of water
- Sponge
- New air filter
- Broom
1. Turn your heater off before doing any cleaning to the furnace unit.
2. Inspect your Armstrong furnace for any cracks, rust or other damage. If you find any damage, a professional service technician should be contacted.
3. Vacuum around and under the outside unit coils if your furnace is connected with an air conditioning unit.
4. Put on a pair of rubber gloves before cleaning your furnace cabinet.
5. Add some liquid dish soap to a bucket of water and agitate. Wipe the outside of the furnace cabinet with a sponge dipped in the soapy water. Liquid dish soap is made to cut grease so this solution should remove any grease residue on your furnace cabinet as well.
6. Remove the air filter from the furnace or indoor air intake. If your air filter is reusable, vacuum it then wash it with soapy water. Rinse the filter completely then allow it to dry before re-installing it. A disposable air filter should be thrown away and replaced with a new one. Replace or clean your air filter every six weeks for maximum efficiency.
7. Check the vent terminal screens for your furnace and sweep away any built-up dust or dirt.
