How to Compare Steel Sheds

Having an outside storage shed helps when the garage is cluttered. There are dozens of styles and designs to choose from, and available in a wide array of sizes. There are a few important details to look for when buying a steel shed to guarantee the best buy for the money and needs.

  1. Research the various manufacturers of steel sheds. Look for a company that specializes in quality sheds and check out any business with the Better Business Bureau.

  2. Choose a steel shed that has been hot dipped in galvanized steel and coated with baked-on polyester enamel or vinyl.

  3. Investigate the hardware with the shed. The best is corrosion resistant hardware and the manufacturer should advertise it as such. If hardware is used that is not corrosion resistant, then it will result in rusted screws, nuts and bolts. Besides damaging the steel, this causes ugly red streaks of red rust.

  4. Check the thickness of the steel panels used to construct the shed. Use sheet metal no thinner than 0.25 mm thick. Sheet panels at 1.2 mm thickness are a better choice for added security.

  5. Look at the lock. A three to five point locking mechanism is best, constructed from corrosion resistant metal.

  6. Check the anchoring kit. Most steel sheds come with one. It is crucial to anchor the steel shed, or it could tip in a bad storm. If in an area with high winds or excessive snow, the shed should have a snow or wind load rating, which shows the sturdiness during inclement weather.
