How to Connect Downspout Elbows
It is not uncommon for downspout elbows to become broken or disconnected. When this happens, the elbows need to be repaired or replaced. Downspouts help remove water from the roof and channel it down the side of the house and into a drain. Elbow connect to downspout to help remove water around turns and bends of the gutters.
Items needed:
- Ladder
- Screws
- Drill
Step 1: Lean a ladder up against the side of the house where the downspout is located. Be sure the ladder is steady and does not lean or fall over. Ask someone to hold the ladder steady while you access the gutters.
Step 2: Slide the downspout up through the bottom of the elbow. Gently push the downspout up inside the elbow as far as it goes. When you feel it hit the end, you know it is in far enough. Be careful not to use too much force as it could cause the downspout to puncture the elbow.
Step 3: Use a drill to insert a screw into each side of the elbow. Be sure to insert the screws near the edge of the elbow. The screws help hold the downspout inside the elbow.
Step 4: Climb down the ladder and find the bottom of the downspout. Connect it to a second elbow the same way you connected the top of the downspout to the first elbow.
Step 5: Slide the end of the downspout into the elbow. Gently push the downspout into the elbow as far as it goes. When you feel the downspout press against something, you know it fits inside the elbow.
Step 6: Use a drill to insert a screw into each side of the elbow. The screws help secure the downspout to the elbow. Be sure to clean the downspouts and elbows on a regular basis to prevent clogs and damage.
