How to Connect Downspouts
Downspouts are a part of a gutter system. Most of them are made out of a metal type material that allows the water to drain from the gutter. Downspouts are attached to holes in the lower part of the gutter. Rain or water runs from the gutter toward and down the downspout. Connecting a downspout to a gutter system is fairly easy. Most items needed can be purchased in any local hardware store.
Items needed:
- ½ metal screws
- Utility knife
- Tin snips
- Electric drill
- Downspout
Instructions:
- Visit your local hardware store to retrieve the pieces needed for your gutter system. Choose the downspout that looks well with your home. Ask a sales associate for assistance if needed.
- Attach the non-tapered part of your downspout above the flange, this is located at the bottom of the gutter.
- Use ½ inch of sheet metals screws. These should fit through the downspout and into the flange. It is necessary for it to go through all sides of your downspout. You can use an electric drill to make sure the screws are securely tight. Make sure they are not too tight.
- Use a small utility knife to cut pieces of your downspout, if needed. Make the cuts as square as possible. It is important to finish cutting the downspout with tin snips. This will allow the downspout to fit better with the other pieces.
- Assemble your downspout by putting the non-tapered end of the downspout over the tapered end. Screw each connection together. Use ½ metal screws to connect them on each side.
- Make sure your downspout is installed a few inches from the ground. Attach the elbow at the end. Run pieces of your downspout along the ground horizontally, this should move away from the house. This will keep water from building up near one area which could cause leaks around your house foundation.
