How to Control Urine Odor in Cat Kennels

The smell of urine in a cat kennel when you are looking for a new pet can often be overwhelming. When you work in a small area where several cats are kept, keeping the urine smell down is important. Not only does it make those coming to look at the cats happier, but it is just unhealthy to breathe that smell all day long.

  1. Remove the cats from the kennel so that they cannot continue to urinate in the kennel while you clean it.

  2. Remove any dirty bedding, cloth or paper that may have been soaked through that could still smell like urine. If possible, toss them out, if not wash them thoroughly with soap, water and bleach.

  3. Spray the kennel with a strong disinfectant; such as Lysol, Simple Green or another odor eliminating product. Allow it to sit for ten to twenty minutes for optimum odor control.

  4. Sprinkle the entire bottom of the kennel with baking powder. This will absorb any of the urine as well as the smell that may be left in the cat kennel. Allow this to sit for five to ten minutes to absorb the odor and urine that may be left behind. The baking powder may turn a dingy color this is normal.

  5. With a hot rag or sponge, clean out the cat kennel. Remove all the baking powder that is on the bottom of the kennel. This should have eliminated most of the urine odor.

  6. Place fresh linens or other kennel linings that you prefer. If you can find ones that have never been used that would be preferable because they will not have any odor to them at all.

  7. Set the box of baking powder somewhere inside the room where the cat kennels are; this will help control the odor in the room.
