How to Open a Pet Boarding Kennels
Opening your own pet kennel is a good idea for a business, especially if you are a pet owner yourself. You will be able to provide a great service to other pet owners and they will feel more secure knowing that their animal is being taken care of by a fellow owner.
- Inquire about zoning laws. Contact the county clerks office to find out about the zoning requirements for your location. Also find out the legal requirements for starting your business.
- Consider investing in a franchise. If you have enough start-up capital and meet the requirements, then you can own a kennel franchise such as Camp Bow Wow or Spa Paw Resort.
- Determine the size of your kennel. Figure out how many dogs you want to be able to accommodate at your kennel. You can keep it as small as six or as large as 40.
- Choose your location. Once you have decided what size you want the kennel to be, make sure you select a location big enough to accommodate the pets comfortably. If you are working on a small budget, you can use a garage for the kennel. Make sure that the building you choose is insulated and has lots of windows and ventilation.
- Label your food. You will need a variety of pet food on-hand so make sure that you keep it in properly sealed containers and label it. Keep a log of each pet's feeding schedule.
- Keep accurate records. You will need to include information such as the pet's name, name of owner and other pertinent medical information about the pet.
