How to Convert a Grill From a Propane Tank to a Propane Line

Constantly replacing and refilling the propane tank on your grill can be annoying and expensive. You can save yourself time, money and aggravation by connecting your grill to a propane source within your home by way of a propane line. Converting a grill from a propane tank to a propane line is a rather easy process.

Things You Will Need:

  • Pliers

  • Tape measure

  • Propane line

  1. Close the valves on both the propane tank that is attached to your grill and the larger propane tank inside of your home. Open propane valves can pose a serious safety risk, so take the time to ensure that both valves are closed completely.

  2. Remove the propane tank from your grill.

  3. Use a pair of pliers to remove the regulator that is attached to your grill's current propane tank connection mechanism.

  4. Use a tape measure to measure the distance between your grill and the main propane supply within your home. Record this distance.

  5. Visit a local hardware store and purchase a propane gas line in an adequate length that will connect your grill to your home's main propane source.

  6. Attach the propane gas line to the regulator that is located on your home's main propane tank. Run the line from the propane tank to the grill. It is important that you run the line along the house or another structure where it will not be cut by the lawnmower or other tools.

  7. Attach the propane gas line to the connection mechanism that is located on the back of your grill.

  8. Open the valve on the main propane tank and inspect the line and connections for any evidence of a leak. If the connection is secure, your grill is ready for use.
