How to Coordinate Colors in Kitchen Decorating

Decorating a kitchen is generally a more detailed process than other areas of the home. A kitchen that is well coordinated will bring color from the countertops, cabinets, walls and appliances into a picture of the perfect compliment. When selecting colors for your space, consider colors that coordinate and enhance each other.

What You'll Need:

  • Paint swatches for color ideas

  • Home decor magazines

  • Layout of the kitchen

  1. Collect a small booklet of your preferred colors and kitchen ideas for your new kitchen. If you are just planning to give your current kitchen a face-lift, grab several swatches of paint colors for the walls and the cabinets. Lay them out and look over each one for patters and combination's that work well with each other. Consider taking pictures of the current set up during different times of day, this will give you an idea of the how the kitchen will look light wise during different times of the day. The differences can have an affect on the paint or fabric colors you select.

  2. Inspect the overall layout of the kitchen as well as where the windows are or where the light is coming in from.

  3. Look at the current colors of the appliances in your kitchen or the colors of the appliances that will be installed in your kitchen. Think of colors that will compliment these color choices rather than fight against them.

  4. Repaint or resurface your existing cabinets rather than install new ones. In the long run, this will save you a considerable amount of money. Select colors that blend well with the walls or backslash.

  5. Test out each new color choice before you paint the entire area. Brush on several different shades of the same color and look at it at different times of the day to see what it will look like.
