How to Make Kitchen Furniture

The kitchen is one of the most-used rooms in the entire house. Therefore, it's furniture must serve multiple purposes. For example, a kitchen table can be a dinner table, homework desk or a buffet table. Since it has so many uses, it must be versatile.

Supplies

  • Two-by-four-feet finished plywood - two pieces

  • Two-by-three-feet two-inch finished plywood - two pieces

  • Two-by-three-feet-two-inch finished wood molding 3/4-inch mitered - two pieces

  • Two-by-four-feet finished wood molding 3/4-inch mitered - one piece

  • Two-by-four-feet finished wood molding 3/4-inch non-mitered - one piece

  • Wood screws

  • Wood glue

  • Wood putty

  • Finishing nails

  • Stain

  • Drill

  1. Cut all lumber to the required sizes before beginning assembly. Miter three pieces of wood molding to a 90-degree angle. Leave the long piece as it is, do not miter it.

  2. Use a cordless drill to place pilot holes in the two-by-four-feet finished plywood for screws on the table's top.

  3. Screw the two side pieces into the top of the table. Apply wood stain in the color of your choice to the wood molding pieces. Let each coat dry at least two hours before applying the next coat. Always use thin coats of stain. It is better to apply several thin coats rather than one thick coat, which can set and become pooled in spots.

  4. Measure up eight-inches from the lower edge and install three additional pilot holes on each side of the table.

  5. Insert the final piece of two-by-four-feet finished plywood between the side supports and install screws to stabilize the structure. Use wood putty to fill any nail holes.

  6. Put the molding on the front of the table. Align the miters and use small finishing nails to tap molding into place. If gaps exist in the corners, use wood putty (the same color as your wood) to fill any discrepancies. Place the non-mitered piece over the shelf and attach it with finishing nails.
