How to Cover Kitchen Windows
Windows in a kitchen allow outside light to enter and provide a wonderful view into the outdoors while cooking and washing dishes. If you live in an area where the view outside your kitchen window isn’t so pleasant, then you may want to cover the windows in your kitchen. Window kitchen coverings are available in many styles, but the amount of sunlight you wish to let in will greatly impact your decision.
Things You'll Need:
- Measuring tape
- Drill
- Curtain rod
- Blinds
- Curtains
- Screws
- Notice the amount of sunlight that enters through the windows throughout the day. Pay particular attention to the amount of light that shines through in the morning or evening hours or times that you will be using your kitchen. Strong amounts of sunlight can strain the eyes and affect what you are trying to accomplish at the time. For strong amounts of sunlight window coverings will need to block sunlight, but for windows without a lot of light, sheer thin coverings are a good choice.
- Measure the window’s dimensions. If you plan on purchasing blinds, measure the inside width and height of the window. For curtain window coverings measure the windows outside width and height, as well as how wide you wish to hang your curtains and how far you wish for the curtain to fall past the window. Write down the measurements and carry them with you when you are choosing your coverings.
- Purchase the window coverings that fit your needs at a local hardware or department store in the home décor section. Be sure to purchase any necessary hardware needed to properly hang your coverings, such as rods and brackets to hang curtains with. Blinds usually come with the proper hardware but make sure before leaving the store.
- Install the hardware necessary for hanging your window coverings. Curtain rods should be placed at least an inch above the top of the window frame. Use a drill to place screws into the wall and hold the brackets in place after you’ve measured and know where they should go. Place the curtains onto the curtain rod and adjust the rod to the appropriate width or measurement from one bracket to the other. Place the ends of the curtain rod onto the bracket. Adjust the curtain as necessary to cover the curtain rod.
- Install the mounting brackets and hardware for the roman blinds on the top side of the window, on the inside of the window frame. Screw the hardware in place using a drill. Slide the top portion of the blinds into the slot locate in the hardware and the fold the locking bracket down over the hole and snap it into place to keep the blinds from falling out when you pull the cord. Adjust the length of the blinds to fit your window by gently tugging the pull cord to let them down. Pull again to leave them in place.
