How to Cover Textured Paint

Textured paint is often used to give the walls depth and a unique appearance. However, painting over this textured surface requires more preparation than a standard paint job. You will first need to prepare the walls and remove the texture before you can paint the surface of the textured walls.

  1. Move any furniture in the room to the center of the room and completely cover this furniture with a large drop cloth to protect it from getting paint on it while you are working.

  2. Close the doors that connect the room where you are going to be working from your work space. This will keep the dust and debris from settling on other surfaces throughout the home.

  3. Open the windows in the space where you are working so that you have proper ventilation in the space. You do not want to work with paint in a closed-up space due to the toxic paint fumes that are released into the air.

  4. Use an electric sander and a medium-grit sand paper to sand off the textured surface on the walls that you are going to be painting. You want to be sure that the surface of the walls is entirely smooth before you begin applying any paint.

  5. Use the brush attachment on a standard household vacuum to remove all of the dust that has settled on the surface of the walls and floors of the space you are preparing. Wipe them down with a went cloth and allow to dry.

  6. Apply the first coat of the paint color of your choice to the walls using a standard paintbrush and roller to apply the paint to the now smooth walls.

  7. Apply a second coat of paint to the walls taking care to ensure that there are no streak marks or other imperfections that need to be touched up.
