How to Create a Backyard Patio

Backyard patio designs create a functional outdoor living space that could provide an alternative location to relax and to entertain. When you decide to create such a little space you should keep these two functions in mind when choosing your preferred design.

  1. Determine the type of flooring to use for your patio. Several options are available for flooring including: concrete, brick and cobblestone. Consider the shape you wish to use for your flooring when making this decision.

  2. Select a theme for your patio design. By selecting a theme you could select other pieces to include into your backyard patio design more easily. For example, a Zen themed backyard patio design would focus around relaxation. You may include a small waterfall or fountain into such a design.

  3. Select your focal point for your backyard patio design. For instance, if you opted to create the Zen themed backyard patio designed mentioned in step 2 you could use the waterfall or fountain as the focal point. A focal point is basically one item in which you create your design around by including items that carry on its theme or meaning.

  4. Select your furniture and color scheme. When selecting your furniture realize that any furniture placed into a yard is exposed to the elements. You should select materials that are weather resistant and durable. This does not mean you have to sacrifice style or color you just need to locate pieces that will stand the test of time and survive the elements. Also when you choose the colors for this furniture try to mix and match yet does not overly emphasize one color.

  5. Select your decor and fixtures. Select items such as statuary and sculptures that fit with your theme. For instance, for the Zen themed backyard patio you could include a small koi pond to add to your waterfall. You could add lighting around your patio that aluminates the area but does not overwhelm you with light. Keep it basic yet sophisticated.
