How to Create Focal Point in a Living Room
In most homes, the living room is the busiest room in the house. It's where people relax after work or school, it's the family gathering area, and it's usually where people pass through on their way in and out of the house. Creating a focal point is important to a comfortable living room layout.
The first thing you should do to create a focal point in your living room is inventory everything you plan to be there. What types of furniture, electronics, storage or decorations will you be using?
Next, decide what will be done in the living room. Will your entertainment center be in the living room? Is there a fireplace?
A focal point is the center of attention for the room. Does your living room have any prominent built-in features? Is there a fireplace or a bookshelf built into the wall? If so, that can be your focal point.
If your plan is to have your TV or entertainment center in the room, you can build a focal point around it.
Once you have determined your focal point, it's time to start arranging. If your focal point is built into your room, such as a bookshelf or fireplace, you can build your focal point around it. Furniture can be arranged either facing or away from your focal point, depending on your preferences.
If your focal point is an add-on, such as a television, try to place it where things can be arranged around it without obstructing movement or views.
Try to avoid having a sizable empty space separated from the focal point. For example, if a couch is placed in the middle of the room facing a wall mounted television, it's better to have the couch closer to the opposite wall unless you have something to fill the empty space.
Use wall decorations and lighting when possible to build on the focus points. Photos, shelves and plants make good additions. It's helpful to have a focal point that is well lit by a window during the daytime.
