How to Create Hanging Bicycle Storage

A bicycle can occupy a lot of space when on the floor and propped on a stand.  If it is stored in a garage or small apartment, it can take up a large amount of space.  You can create more space by hanging the bikes from the ceiling of the garage or room.

Things you will need to create hanging bicycle storage:

  • Stud finder

  • Bike hooks

  • Measuring tape

  1. Take the bicycle and prop it on its stand so you have availability to the wheels.  You will then measure the bicycle from wheel to wheel where the tires will touch the ground.  This distance can be different based on bike type.  If there are multiple bikes needed to be hanged, measure each one.

  2. Find a joist in the ceiling where you want to store the bike.  If the garage has an open ceiling, pick a wooden joist beam that runs the entire length of the bike.  If the ceiling is made with drywall, you will use a stud finder to find joists.  Take measurements for the length you measured for the bike.  Be sure to mark the beginning and end of the length with a pencil to show where to put the bike hooks.

  3. Put a bike hook into each point marked.  You will use standard bicycle hooks because they can fit around the wheel rims and hold the weight of the bike.  Read the directions that come with the bike hooks for installing them.  All brands have a different method.

  4. Put more bike hooks for all the bicycles you have to hang.  Make sure there is enough space around the bikes for the handlebars and pedals.

  5. Turn the bicycle upside down.  Put one tire on a hook so it will go through the spokes and around the metal tire rim.  Put the other tire on the other hook and release it slowly.  At this point the bicycle will be able to hang upside down from the ceiling.
