How to Create a Green Desert Landscape

The desert is dry and arid, but that does not mean it is without color and green vegetation. Desert landscaping is very popular with people that want a beautiful yard that is also low maintenance. Incorporating green desert plants can make a yard look great.

  • Visit your local  plant nursery. The employees at a nursery are trained to be very knowledgeable about plants. Ask their advice about the best green desert plants that grow well in your area. There are a number of different green desert plants, including cacti, shrubs, trees and vines. While at the nursery look at all of the different plants available, and purchase the ones that you think would look best in your yard.

  • Purchase landscaping rock. Grass does not fit into a desert landscape. The most popular ground covering for this type of landscaping is rock. Landscaping rock comes in a variety of colors and sizes. Visit a company that sells landscaping rock to pick out the type you will use in your yard.

  • Make a landscaping design plan. You don't want to place your desert plants in random spots. Sketch a design plan on a sheet of paper. Having a plan will make it much easier to put your desert landscape together.

  • Install a drip system. Desert plants do not require a great deal of water, but they do need to be watered from time to time. You can put a drip system on a timer to ensure that your green desert plants get water when they need it.

  • Dig holes for your plants. Follow the directions from the nursery regarding the size and depth of the hole. Place your plants in their hole and cover with soil.

  • Shovel the landscaping rock into your yard. Use a rake to smooth it out over the whole area.
