How to Customize Mirrors
If you have a plain mirror you can customize it with a decorative border to give it a nice stylish look. Create an inner border using black and gold paint to give the mirror an antique-looking finish. Customizing a mirror can be done to any mirror of any size.
Materials Needed:
- Painter's tape
- Ruler
- Black and gold paint for glass
- Brushes: stencil and foam
- Clean the mirror using glass cleaner and allow for it to completely dry.
- Use painter's tape to cover up the areas of the mirror that you do not want to paint. Set pieces of tape as a guide using a long strip of tape for random measurements. Start on one side of the mirror and use a ruler to measure the width that you want for the border. Use a one inch piece of tape to mark the end of the upcoming paint run, if you are measuring from the left side of the mirror. The width that you want for the border will be marked by the right side of tape.
- Make the measurements every 10 inches for a continuous strip of tape to be applied in the area where you do not want to paint the mirror. Use a short strip of tape as a guide and place the end of the tape on the mirror, then unroll and stick on the long strip of tape. When done, the long strip of tape should be lined up with the right edge of the short pieces.
- Remove the short strips of tape carefully. You want to make sure you end up with a taped area that is equal distance around the entire mirror.
- Use acrylic craft paint and a sponge brush to paint a black basecast. Let this dry for about two hours, and if needed, apply a second coat.
- Randomly dab the gold paint into the black border of the mirror once the black paint has dried. It is fine in some areas have heavier paint than others. Continue to dab into the black paint border as you refill the stencil brush. Make sure to overlap the previous dabbed areas to leave some areas still showing black.
- Allow the paint to dry completely and then hang the mirror and enjoy!
