How to Cut a Granite Vanity Top

Granite is a very popular vanity top because it's extremely durable and water resistant. A professional will charge a lot of money to install granite tops. Save yourself a lot of money by installing the granite yourself. This project will be challenging but certainly not impossible.

Things You'll Need:

  • Pencil

  • Paper

  • Grease Pencil

  • Carpenters Square

  • Safety Glasses

  • Gloves

  • Carpenters Tape

  • Grinder

  1. Measure the area where you want to install the granite. Draw a diagram as you take measurements to use as blue prints for installing the granite and to use for ordering supplies. Make sure you include every little detail when drawing the diagram, accuracy is very important.

  2. Take your diagram to a home improvement store to order the granite. There will be someone there to help you pick out the granite and even show you a few samples. There will probably be many types of colors and patterns to choose from.

  3. Place the granite on sawhorses and secure it with carpenters tape. You'll probably need someone to help you lift it on the sawhorses because it will probably be really heavy.

  4. Mark the spots where you want to cut the granite with a grease pencil and carpenters square. This will allow you to easily see the marks when you start cutting.

  5. Cut the granite with a diamond blade attached to a grinder. Make sure you wear eye and hand protection. Cut slowly so you stay in a straight line and don't damage the blade.
