How to Make a Vanity Top
A vanity top can change the entire appearance of your bathroom or other personal space. When making a top to go on your vanity, it is important that you use a design that complements the surrounding elements of your home. Take the time to carefully plan what you want before making any purchases.
Things You Will Need:
- Tape measure
- Pencil
- Plywood
- Handsaw
- Power nailer
- Screws
- Screwdriver
- Backer board
- Thin-set mortar
- Notched trowel
- Tiles
- Grout
- Grout float
- Cloth
- Measure the top portion of the base to ensure you have the correct figures for the top. Use a tape measure to accomplish this, and make sure to add 2 inches to each side for adjustments, and to add an overhang for added style.
- Transfer the exact measurements of the base onto two pieces of plywood with a pencil and cut these pieces with a hand saw. Make sure the two pieces fit each other and attach them together with a power nailer, and onto the top of the base with screws in each corner.
- Cut backer board with the same measurements so that the top protects the water from going through into the base of the vanity.
- Apply thin-set mortar onto the top of the base with a notched trowel. Place the backer board on top of the mortar to secure it into place.
- Apply another layer of mortar with the same application method on top of the backer board. Lay the tiles onto the top of the vanity to finish the design. Allow the mortar to dry before moving onto the next step.
- Apply grout onto the tiles and wipe away the film on top with a wet cloth when done. When wiping away the additional grout, make sure to move the float in a diagonal direction so that you do not scrape the grout out of the joints.
