How to Cut a Picture for a Frame

Advanced technology of digital cameras and cell phones has increased the popularity of taking pictures. With all these pictures floating around, many are must-haves for the photo frames. Usually this isn't a problem, but sometimes a picture just doesn't fit inside the frame. This is when cutting or cropping the picture comes into play.

1. Measurements When you have a picture that is too big for the picture frame, you will need to cut it to size. This is easily done when the proper measurements are taken. To do this, disassemble the frame and remove the glass. Place the picture on a table and lay the glass on top of the picture. You want to make sure that the position of the glass is on the area of the picture that you want seen in the frame. Once done, take a pencil or pen and trace the outside of the frame. If you feel uncomfortable tracing directly onto the picture then you can turn the picture upside down and follow the same steps. This may be a little more difficult as you will not be able to see the picture for exact positioning of the glass.

2. Cutting the Picture Once you trace the glass onto the picture, it is time to trim the picture. If you have a steady hand then a simple pair of scissors will work but if you tend to be a little shaky then use a paper cutter with a sharp blade.

3. Assemble Frame When the picture is trimmed to the glass size then you can reassemble the frame. If using a wooden frame, the wood of the frame can come in varying widths. It is best to realize that a portion of the glass is hidden behind the frame, and therefore, small portions of the picture will also be hidden behind the frame.
