How to Deal With Sterility

After months of trying to have a baby, you may find out you are sterile. Some reasons for sterility are untreated STD’s, anemia, obesity, damaged reproductive organs and a low sperm count. With advanced technology and other options, sterility no longer necessarily determines whether you can become a parent.

  • Get the advice of a medical professional. It is important to find out which partner has the sterility problem or if it is both of you. Your doctor may be able to tell you about different types of procedures that will help you conceive such as tuboplasty, fimbrioplasty and the reversal of a sterilization.

  • Look into other options when it comes to having a baby. Adoption is one idea. Many children are born each day to mothers who may not be able to keep them. It is important you make sure your adoption is legal and will be recognized in a court of law.

  • Consider a surrogate mother. Maybe a friend or family member will carry a child for you. Surrogacy can sometimes be complicated if the surrogate mother has mixed feelings about giving the child up. Make sure you discuss this option with both the surrogate and an attorney before going through with this method.

  • Seek out counseling. If you have overwhelming feelings about being sterile, it is a good idea to have someone to talk to. There are many professionals who can help you and your partner work through these difficult times.
