How to Deal With a Mental Illness in the Family
When individuals are faced with the challenges of dealing with a mental illness in the family, it is reassuring to know that they are not alone. There are a number of resources a family can utilize to lessen the challenges and help them cope with common stressors.
Seek information. When dealing with a mental illness in the family, it helps to learn about the illness. Visit your library or conduct an online search of your family member's diagnosis to better understand the dynamic and how you can help them cope.
Consider joining a support group. Dealing with a mental illness in the family is hard on the caregiver or other family members. Support groups offer an outlet for family members to share stories of hope and inspiration that can turn a bleak situation into one of hope and promise.
Consult a mental health professional. If the mental health patient has not been treated by a mental health professional, make an appointment. Many patients respond well to mild to moderate treatment plans that may include cognitive behavioral therapy or pharmaceutical intervention. Be sure to check with your family member first before you make an appointment. It is not fair to schedule an appointment with a mental health professional without the authorization of the patient first, providing he is lucid and is not a danger to himself or others.
Find time for relaxation. Spending time relaxing or having fun can be a great stress reliever. Include your family member who has the mental illness when you can, so that he too can experience some leisure time.
