- Purchase a primer with a high degree of adhesion suitable for use on plastic. Buy acrylic or latex paint that has an exterior use rating. These materials are commonly available at hardware or paint stores.
- Pour warm water into a bucket and add a tablespoon of dish detergent for every gallon of water to make a solution of soapy water. Soak a rag in the soapy water and remove the surface dirt from the plastic patio furniture with the rag.
- Prepare a bleach solution containing a capful of bleach for every gallon of water. Clean plastic patio furniture with this solution to remove older stains if soapy water is inadequate for the task.
- Allow the plastic patio furniture to dry thoroughly. Sand the furniture with fine grit sandpaper to expose the bare plastic.
- Apply a coat of the primer to the plastic patio furniture with a paintbrush according to the directions. Allow the furniture to dry for at least 12 hours. Repeat this step to apply another coat of primer to the furniture.
- Apply the paint to the plastic patio furniture with a paintbrush. Allow the paint to dry thoroughly according to the instructions before using the furniture.
- Add cushions to plastic patio chairs and lounges. This will improve the color and comfort of these types of furniture. Place a tablecloth over plastic patio tables to improve the appearance of these types of furniture.
- Store plastic patio furniture indoors to prolong the life of the furniture.
