How to Design Decks and Patios

When choosing between building a deck and installing a patio, it helps if you know a little bit about the basic installation of each design.   In some cases, you can have both a deck and a patio if your yard is large enough.  A deck leading down to a patio is an ideal way to create a clean transition from the deck to the patio, to the lawn.

  • Consider building a concrete patio.  Choose from concrete patterns to make a beautiful patio.  Design possibilities are endless due to the various colors available. Ensure that you choose a color combination that will complement your home and complement the landscape.

  • Enjoy the flexibility of the concrete patio because you can expand them in the future.  Simply purchase more concrete blocks to lay down to add to the original design of the first patio to be able to produce a seamless extension.

  • Design a deck if you prefer the look and feel of wood or composite wood.  Wood does not weather well outside.

  • Sand the wood with heavier grit that will roughen the surface of the wood.  This helps the primer to soak and adhere to the boards.

  • Remove and fixtures that are easily replaced and apply painters tape to any walls or floor molding to deter unwanted paint.

  • Place a drop cloth to the area to prevent paint splatter.

  • Apply primer according to the manufacturer’s instructions and allow to dry.   Most composite board is not as receptive to primer and paint as regular wood and therefore requires at least two coats of primer, and some cheaply made board requires three coats.

  • Select a brush or a roller to apply a thin coating of paint and allow to dry.  Apply a second or third coat if needed, allowing the paint to dry between coatings.
