How to Design Garden Signs

Signs are a great way to create fun decorations in your garden. Use them to label rows of vegetables or create funny sayings that reflect your garden humor. There are a number of ways to design and create the perfect signs for your garden.

Supplies

  • Wood Stakes (available in bundles at garden centers)

  • Wood scraps (tip: ask the store to cut them to size for you)

  • Wood nails

  • Sandpaper

  • Paint

  • Clear sealant

  • Hammer

Directions

  1. List the signs you need for your garden, then list the signs you want. Decide what size signs you would like.  Total the number of pieces and the size needed. Go to your favorite home improvement store and have the wood pieces cut to the size you need. Many times you can find wood scraps at deep discounts.

  2. Sand the wood lightly, just enough to smooth it out. Remove all debris from wood.

  3. Attach wood stake with nails to the back of your sign. By attaching the stake first you reduce the risk of damage to your paint job.

  4. Apply base coat of paint, let dry and then apply decorative paint. Let paint dry for up to four hours. A base coat allows you to ensure that the wood is fully covered, and that your decorative work shows up well.

  5. Apply a minimum of two coats of the clear sealant. Allow to dry for 12 hours. The sealant will protect your signs and increase the life of them.

  6. Set stakes in place and hammer into the ground to secure them.
