How to Make Garden Signs
Garden signs are fun and whimsical; creating your own can give your garden a personal feel. Signs that are hand painted and not mass produced not only look great, but also showcase your other talents. There are a wide range of premade sign kits; consider wood scraps as an inexpensive alternative.
Lumber yard scraps can easily become a great garden sign. Most wood scraps are just cut wrong or broke during shipping. The cost on these pieces range from $0.25 -$4. They are a great bargain for an afternoon project.
Supplies
- Wood scraps
- Wood post wood glue
- Wood paint
- Paintbrushes
- Sandpaper
- Clear sealant (for outdoor use)
Directions
- Draw out your design; work out any design issues before you begin to work directly with the wood.
- Cut the wood scrap to the size you want for your sign. You may be able to get several signs out of one scrap of wood.
- Attach the stake to your wood scrap with wood glue and nails or staples. The wood glue is extra protection to hold the two pieces together.
- Sand the wood scraps to remove any shine and imperfections. Some scraps will have a paint code on them; this will be covered when you paint the surface.
- Apply your paint colors one at a time. This helps to prevent mixing colors and ensures that lines stay solid. Allow to dry completely.
- Brush on the clear outdoor sealant. Apply at least two coats. This will protect your garden sign from the weather and prevent fading.
