How to Make Outdoor Garden Signs

Outdoor garden signs are a great way to welcome visitors or celebrate holidays and special occasions. Creating an outdoor garden sign is much easier than one might think. Most arts and crafts stores will have everything you need, so you can go home and get started right away.

Supplies

  • Wood shape cut outs

  • Wood dowels or post (which you choose depends on the size of your sign)

  • Wood glue

  • Wood paint

  • Paintbrushes

  • Sandpaper

  • Clear sealant (choose a product that is meant for outdoor use)

Directions

  1. Decide how you want to decorate your sign, what it will say and which colors will be used. Draw it out so that you have a guide to use as you work.

  2. Attach the dowel or stake to your wood shape with wood glue. Allow to dry completely. It may be necessary to drill a hole for the dowel. If using a wood stake, it may be possible to staple or nail the stake to the back of your sign.

  3. Sand the surface lightly, just enough to remove any shine on the wood. Dust off all debris.

  4. Brush on your base color and begin to create your sign. Allow each layer or color to dry completely before moving on to the next. This will prevent bleeding and mixing of colors.

  5. Cover the entire piece with a clear outdoor sealant. Use several coats id needed. The sealant not only adds a shine, it creates a weather proof top coat. This will ensure that you can reuse your sign for many seasons.
