- Find a piece of wood to use for your garden sign. You may be able to find old pieces of wood from an old barn or house being torn down. To make a new piece of wood look like it has been weathered by the elements, use different tools to scrape and chip the piece of wood.
- Think of what you would like your sign to say. You may wish to use an old saying or slogan on your garden sign, or paint a sign that is advertising fruits and vegetables for sale.
- Paint the wood in an off white color, to give it an antique appearance.
- Take a wax candle and rub it over a few spots on the wooden sign. This will prevent the next coat of paint from sticking to these areas, helping to create a worn, rustic look.
- Use an old paintbrush to brush a topcoat of paint over the wooden sign. You may wish to use a type of spray paint that creates a cracked, antique look. You can also create a rustic appearance by dipping a sponge in paint and dabbing the sign in certain spots.
- Wait until the paint has dried, and remove any candle wax from the sign.
- Use a long, thin paintbrush to paint your chosen saying and designs on the sign. Good choices for designs include flowers, berries and vines.
- Display your weathered garden sign by attaching it to a wooden garden stake and sticking it in the ground. You may also display it by hanging it from the fence.
