How to Design Steel Buildings

Designing a steel building cannot be done by an armature. In fact, it should only be done by a professional engineer. With the right tools and computer animated design (CAD) programs, an engineer can design a steel building that their customers will love.

  • Current building codes

  • Customer’s needs



  1. Determine the needs of your customer before you begin. What is the purpose of the steel building? How many people are they expecting will be in the building at any one time. This is vital information that you will need before you can go any further.

  2. Use a high-end CAD program to design your steel building. There are several on the market, such as AutoCAD and Cadidesk. Your program will ask you for basic parameters before you being, such as the size and shape of the building. Then, you will be able to customize as you see fit.

  3. Refer to applicable building codes in your area as you build. Although it may not seem to be a big deal at the moment, your building will need to be up to code when it is turned in to the city or county for approval. Remember that there are city, county, state and federal regulations that you will have to keep in mind. Also, there may be special regulations dealing with steel buildings that you will need to keep in mind.

  4. Run several tests on your building once you have finished drawing in the CAD program. Test the loads for wind and other events to make sure that the building will hold up to the toughest conditions.
