How to Design Your Own Formal Gowns
Formal gowns can be worn for a number of occasions, such as weddings, proms, black-tie events and any other type of event that requires elegant attire. If you are specific about what you wish to wear, designing your own formal gown may be the best option for you.
- Look through fashion magazines to get some ideas that interest you. If you are designing a gown for a specific event, such as a wedding, look for magazines that specialize in weddings to get a more specific idea for inspiration.
- Consider the type of body shape you have and narrow your choices. If you wish to minimize the width of the waist and hips, an A-line design may be the best option for your body type. If you have problem areas that you wish to hide, incorporate accessories, such as a shawl, to help hide those areas.
- Draw a sketch of the general dress as a base for your own design. This basic sketch includes the length of your dress and any specifics, such as whether you want the dress to be strapless or have a halter top design. This sketch is the general outline of your design and can be modified before having the dress made.
- Decide on the type of fabric you want the dress to be made out of. If you are not familiar with the types of fabrics available and the texture of these fabrics, take a trip to your nearest fabric store to get an idea. Some of the more commonly used fabrics for formal gowns include satin, douppioni, lace, silk chiffon, tulle, taffeta, silk mikado and organza.
- Add details to the design of your dress that complement the type of fabric you have chosen. Add bows and beading to the dress in the places you wish. Create your own style for the dress and use your creativity.
- Hire a seamstress to make your dress. Whether you wish to wear this dress at an actual event, or if you are making it for your own fashion line, it is always helpful to have an actual dress in front of you.
