How to Design a Kitchen Island

Adding a kitchen island in your kitchen can add value and beauty to your home. If there is ample room in your kitchen for a kitchen island, this would be a terrific idea to include in your kitchen. Kitchen islands help with food prep and counter space in the kitchen. Kitchen islands also create more seating in the kitchen for entertaining.

Items Needed

  • Measuring Tape

  • Sketchpad

  • Graph paper

  • Colored Pencils

1. Measure your kitchen to determine where to place your kitchen island. Using graph paper to decide where to place counters and appliances. Sketch a kitchen island makes sure to allow room to move around the kitchen. Try to keep 48 inches or more between the island and your counter top.

2. Decide what kind of features that your island should be. Add small things like electrical outlets, small appliances, a cooktop or a sink. Add distinctive features like a curved faucet or a butcher block cutting board.

3. Select what material that will be used for your kitchen island. Use three or four kitchen cabinets fastened together. Also, using 2-by-4 boards wrapped in bead board paneling is another way to create your island. Adding a countertop to the kitchen island is another choice. There are many types to choose from like tile, laminate, granite and more. Try to match up your existing material on your countertops. Choose what doors to put on your kitchen island. Add crown molding to your kitchen island.

4. Draw your final sketch with all your amenities using colored, then place the dimensions and countertop details on your graph paper. Color your bar green with a white top. When leaving the bar white, use gray streaks, which will represent a marble top. When all your designs are on paper and your decisions have been made, it is now time to purchase your material.
