How to Install Tile Around a Kitchen Island

How to Design Your Own Kitchen Island

There are different types of kitchen islands ranging from the built-in models that are complete with power outlet, to the stovetops and kitchen sink plus the traditional rustic wooden models. A kitchen island is used to make the process of cooking and clean up go faster.

Things you'll need

  • Graph paper

  • Measuring tape

  • Chisel

  • Sketchpad

  1. Measure out the kitchen space and then create a simple island layout that will fit around all the appliances plus the cabinets that are already in place. Design the location of the counters and appliances using graph paper. Make the island large while allowing room to move around the perimeter. Allow at least 48 inches between the island’s edge and a nearby counter if it is possible.

  2. Decide the features you want to include in the Kitchen Island. Plan to include a cooktop space, an electrical outlet for small appliances, a sink for washing tables and a butcher block top for chopping meat. Make provision for a large faucet so that you can fill a big pot with water.

  3. Choose your construction materials. Build the island by using two or three kitchen cabinets that would all be joined together.

  4. On your sketchpad fine tune the design you have further. Add a new level for the stools and the chairs on one side. Sketch a cabinet or a bar with a sleek finish.

  5. Buy the construction materials. Take the design sketched in your graph paper and reproduce it using the materials you have bought. Now you have an aesthetic kitchen island.
