How to Design a Men's Jacket

Men’s suit jackets made by the Italian designer Gino Valentino and others are known for quality craftsmanship and style. The Italian men’s suit jackets cost a bundle. The consumer may choose a less pricey option, but may not be guaranteed the same fine quality. The following steps will enable a person to design a unique men’s suit jacket with the styling of the expensive Italian designer suit jackets.

Items Needed:

  • Good eye for fashion

  • Men’s fashion magazines

  • Paper

  • Pencil with a good eraser

  • Ruler

  • Tape

  1. Search several men’s fashion magazines for photographs of men’s suit jackets, and cut out the photographs that are of interest.

  2. Separate the photographs into stacks with appealing collars, cuffs, hem lengths, lapels, pockets, shape, sleeves and back. If there is a photograph that has an ideal collar and lapel for example, place the original photograph in one of the stacks, and make a copy or place a note in the other stack.

  3. Tape the photographs onto sheets of paper, and make notes with a pencil about the particular parts of each jacket that is attractive.

  4. Narrow down each of the following features, collars, cuffs, hem lengths, lapels, pockets, shape, sleeves and back to one fashion option.

  5. Start with a clean sheet of paper, and draw the jacket in a closed position with either straight or tailored lines, loose or snug fit and long or short hem length.

  6. Draw the shoulders, whether padded or hanging down over the upper arm.

  7. Add the torso portion to the drawing including the lapels.

  8. Sketch the collar in place next, asymmetrical, curved, pointed, narrow, wide, or with no collar leaving, or erase the torso portion of the jacket under the collar.

  9. Detail the sleeves on the drawing next to the desired length and shape including cuffs or other unique features.

  10. Design the back view of the jacket on a separate piece of paper, starting with the torso. Include darts for the waistline if desired.

  11. Draw the collar and sleeves onto the back view with the front view in mind.

  12. Sketch individual close-up drawings of unique design features such as collar, pockets and cuffs. The drawing should be ready to take to a seamstress or tailor.
