How to Design a One Car Garage

The need for a garage is personal preference. Some people want to park in the covered area close to their house, while others don't. Some people want a garage for storage, and others want a garage for both storage and parking. Designing a one car garage is not difficult if you consider all factors and apply your personal preferences.

1. Determine the need for the garage. Garages are not only used as covered parking, but some want a small garage for storage. This is a great way to have protected storage attached to your home rather than a building in the backyard or a storage unit in another location.

2. Calculate the size of the garage. If you are building the garage for storage, then a smaller design will probably suffice, but if you are using it for parking a car then consider the automobile size. There are many types of cars, trucks, SUVs and vans. You need to think about the height and width of the vehicle you're parking.

3. Consider your options. There are many options you can incorporate in a one car garage design. If you need a place for storage and covered automobile parking then think about a storage attic. This is a place that can be built into the ceiling of the garage. Shelves make easy access to tools, decorations or gardening materials. You may also consider closets for storage.

4. Think about garage entry. Of course, there will a large door, but consider a back or side entry door. It makes entering or exiting the garage easier.

5. Incorporate an automatic garage door opener. This may affect the price slightly, but the convenience of an automatic garage door is well worth any additional money. It permits you to open and close the garage door from your vehicle. There is also a switch installed on the wall for opening and closing.

6. Speak with professional builder. There are many things that go into designing a one car garage. You should consult with a home builder or contractor in order to make sure you have considered all factors.
