How to Determine Eligibility for SSI

Supplemental Security Income is a government-funded program that pays out monthly benefits to anyone who is permanently disabled or temporarily disabled for more than 30 days. These payments are awarded based on eligibility rules. This program is designed to help with living expenses for the household of a disabled person who has limited or no other income.

  • Determine if you meet the basic criteria for the SSI program. In order for an applicant to be eligible for the program a person needs to be a citizen of the United States, is disabled or over the age of 65, and have little-to-no monthly income.

  • Determine how long the disability is expected to last. If the applicant is temporarily disabled then they must wait for 30 days to pass before applying for the program. The estimated time frame that the disability is expected to last should be given by a medical professional. If the disability is permanent, it is important for a medical professional to diagnose the condition as well as the expected prognosis.

  • Visit the Social Security Administrations website and use the online benefit calculator to help to determine if you are eligible for SSI benefits. You will need to have accurate records of the monthly amount of income that is coming into the home of the applicant.

  • Set up an appointment at the local Social Security Administration office to help you determine if you are eligible for SSI benefits. Bring pertinent information with you such as Social Security card, picture ID and proof of any income that comes into the home.
