How to Increase SSI Income

The price of gasoline, groceries, rent and utilities have continued to rise without an increase in benefits for many people. Americans are going to bed hungry, cold, hopeless and stressed. The unemployed and people living on fixed incomes are the most affected by the economy. Knowledge of the factors that affect SSI benefits can prove helpful in drawing the maximum amount of benefits.

Items Needed:

  • Paper

  • Pencil

  • SSI stubs

  • Stubs from all other income sources

  • Telephone

  1. Review total monthly income to assess that income is presently less than the maximum benefit amount. If current SSI benefits in conjunction with other monthly income places total income over the maximum amount, SSI benefits could be reduced. SSI payments takes into account income from other sources, including monthly SSI payments made to spouses.

  2. Write down the name of the source of income on the left side of the paper and the amount of the income on the right side of the paper. Add all monthly income totals.

  3. Inquire if the state in which the person receiving SSI benefits lives offers supplemental SSI benefits. The Social Security Administration will be aware of this information. An increase is possible with supplemental SSI benefits, even if the federal maximum has been reached.

  4. Phone 1-800-722-1213 to contact the Social Security Administration or contact the Social Security Administration in person.

  5. Determine if the state of current residence offers additional supplements for the disabled, blind or elderly. If the person fits one of these categories, apply for additional benefits.

  6. Ask about nutritional assistance, such as food stamps and WIC.

  7. Research if the state offers Medicaid, prescription drug assistance and other assistance for medical needs for SSI recipients.

  8. Consider moving to a state that offers a larger SSI disbursement and additional supplemental benefits. Complete a change of address form with the Social Security Administration before the move and check with the local office after the move.
