How to Determine Men's From Women's Jean Jackets

A true American staple, jean jackets have been in fashion in one form or another since their introduction to the fashion fold in the 1930s. Though first seen as a utilitarian, hardy fabric that was ideal during the pre-World War II era, denim clothing soon became very fashionable through all the subsequent decades in various forms and styles for both men and women.

Because jean jackets are commonly worn and beloved by so many people, there are as many variants in styles and types for both males and females. At quick glance, it may even be difficult to distinguish between a men's jean jacket and a women's jean jacket. There are some key considerations to watch out for, however, that can help you determine what gender a specific denim jacket was designed for.

  • Inspect the tag. This is the quickest and easiest way to find out if a jean jacket is made for a man or woman. The world's first and most famous denim clothing company, Levi's, will indicate on their jean jacket tags whether it is a "Ladies" or "Mens" jacket. If there is no tag or if the writing has been worn off, proceed with the subsequent methods.

  • Look at the body shape. Button the front of the jacket, and lay it down on a flat surface. Most women's jackets will have a subtle or pronounced taper inwards along the bodice to accomodate the womanly curves of a female body. This tapering is meant to follow the tapering of a woman's torso inwards towards the waist. A men's jacket will likely be fairly straight up and down along the sides and maintain a more boxy shape.

  • Check the width of the back and shoulders. Men's coats and jackets are designed to accomodate the much wider shoulders and broader backs of a typically male body type. Excessive roominess in the shoulder and back area, if worn by a female, can indicate that the jacket was built for male measurements.

  • Check any adornments. Jean jackets can come with a variety of acoutrements, such as fringe, decorative metal studs, rhinestones and sequins. These typically will indicate a jean jacket designed for a female, as these decorations are usually reserved for women's fashion. There are, of course, some exceptions. These decorative elements may be pleasing stylistically to either gender, depending on the taste and style preference of each individual.
