How to Fit Women's Suit Jackets Properly

When adding a business suit to your wardrobe, it is vital that you make sure it looks professional when wearing it. Otherwise, it can appear sloppy and unattractive. There are certain aspects to consider when ensuring the jacket has the proper fit.

  1. Try the jacket on and make sure that it is not too loose. If the jacket does not have a snug fit, it can appear unprofessional and make you look unorganized. Additionally, when you try the jacket on, in order to confirm that the fit is not too tight, button the jacket up entirely and look at the buttons around the bust area. If the fabric around the button holes is expanded, the jacket is too tight.

  2. Put your arms directly in front of you and above your head to ensure that the bottom of the jacket fits appropriately. Even though it may fit snug in other areas of your body, if the bottom of the jacket exposes skin or undergarments when you reach, this is not a proper fit. If you have to reach for a file that is above your head, you will look unprofessional.

  3. Look at the shoulder hem to ensure that it meets the edge of your shoulder. If the hem is on your collar, the jacket is too small. Likewise, if the hem falls off of the shoulder, it is too large.

  4. Inspect the flaps to ensure they are on the chest of the fabric. Oftentimes, if the jacket is too tight, these pieces can stick out. Additionally, if the jacket seems slouched, it is too large for your body.
