How to Dig a Hole With a Backhoe

Backhoes are machines capable of lifting large amounts of heavy items. The bucket attachments available for backhoes make them perfect for digging holes on a job site or in a back yard. Buying or renting a backhoe can help you get big projects done in a small amount of time.

Items Needed:

  • Backhoe

  • Landscaping chalk

  1. Make sure the area where you are digging is safe. If you are working on a job site where management has taken care of the proper clearances, you won’t need to worry about this step. However, if the project is one located in someone’s back yard, you should contact “Call Before You Dig” at 8-1-1. This government-sponsored hotline will let you know if there are any important lines or pipes in your digging area. The dangers of digging without clearance include hitting a gas, water or power line, which can result in harm or damage to your family or other families in the area.

  2. Learn how to use the backhoe before digging. Have a friend or a professional teach you the buttons and how each one works. If you are renting the backhoe, the rental company may be more than willing to teach you to ensure you return the backhoe safely and in good condition.

  3. Use landscaping chalk to mark off the area you wish to dig. Determine where you will place the dirt before you get started.

  4. Get in the backhoe and turn it on. Once the bucket is in position at the furthest end of the hole, begin digging up the most superficial layer of dirt. This will break up the soil a bit and allow you to dig deeper more easily.

  5. Work around the hole, digging one section at a time until the entire hole is dug.
