How to Display Family Portraits

Being surrounded by family portraits is a great way to celebrate your life and the people you love.  Displaying family portraits throughout your home also makes it warmer and more inviting.  There is no wrong way to display family portraits, but there are a few simple decorating tips you can use to help you get the look you want.

  • Pick a color scheme for your frames.  Color coordinating your frames will help you create a cohesive look.  If you are not sure what color frames you should use, go with basic colors such as white, black or brown.

  • Pick which portraits you want to hang up.  Don’t limit yourself to traditional themes such as Christmas or graduation.  Include your favorite photos, and ask other family members for their advice.

  • Use the same picture tones.  If you like the way black and white photographs look, you can have your favorite portraits redone in a black and white finish.  If you want to hang up color portraits, don’t include any black and white photographs because they won’t be as noticeable next to colorful pictures.

  • Choose a spot where you want to hang up your family portraits.  Knowing where you want to display your pictures will help you determine the size of frames you need to get and the layout of the photos.

  • Lay all of your pictures out on the floor to figure out how you want to group them on the wall.  Take measurements, so you can hang up all the portraits correctly.

  • Display remaining family portraits throughout your home.  In addition to hanging them up, you can put family portraits in different rooms of your home.  Use end tables, extra surfaces and display cases.
