How to Do Cargo Shipping
Cargo shipping has advanced to the point where almost anything can be shipped either domestically or overseas. Most cargo shipping is done through the air. Whether you choose to use a freight cargo provider that travels through passenger airlines or use a freight carrier that uses dedicated cargo planes will depend on the size and weight of your load.
- Determine whether your cargo load should be shipped using a freight cargo service. It will be cheaper to use traditional commercial shippers like the U.S. Postal Service, UPS and FedEx if your cargo load is less than approximately 100 to 150 pounds. For example, packages that are shipped using UPS will be redirected to the ground delivery service if they weigh less than 150 pounds and are not considered oversized (more than 108 inches in length on any one side). Packages less than 100 to 150 pounds will usually be transported by passenger airlines, while heavier cargo will be shipped using dedicated cargo planes.
- Call the cargo service to make sure your freight will fit and how it should be delivered. Cargo services offer flexible loading options to fit all sizes and shapes of freight. For example, the 747s that airfreight carriers use can flip open their nose for the loading of large or irregularly shaped cargo. Also, call to discuss how your freight should be delivered to the loading docks.
- Package your freight properly for shipment. You will be required to pack your item to make it easy for loading onto planes or other shipping vessels. This could include loading your package onto pallets and tying down your freight with rope.
