How to Do a Backhand Volley

A volley is a relatively simple tennis stroke when you compare it to a groundstroke, but for players who don't come to the net much and who don't particularly like their backhand, the backhand volley can seem intimidating. Once you learn how to hit a backhand volley, though, you will welcome those floaters that come to you at the net.

  1. Grip your racket with a Continental grip, as if you are shaking hands with the racket. The racket should be parallel to your hitting arm.

  2. Stand 3 feet from the net in ready position on the balls of your feet with your racket in front of you and chin height. If you are running for the volley, split step first.

  3. Your non-gripping hand should be at the throat of your racket for a one-hand backhand volley. For a two-hand backhand volley, your non-dominant hand is just above your dominant hand.

  4. Bend your knees a little and step into the ball with your right foot if you are right-handed and with your left foot if you are left-handed. Turn your shoulder at the same time you step with your foot. Your shoulder should be at a 90-degree angle to the net.

  5. Make contact with the ball using a punching motion rather than a swing. As you are hitting, your weight shifts from your left foot to your right foot if you are right-handed and vice versa, if you are left-handed.
