How to Do the Indian Step in Break Dancing
One of the most vital components of a break dance routine is the top rock. This is the introductory portion of a routine in which the dancer begins to show his or her particular style and movements. The Indian step, modeled after traditional Native American dances, is one of the most basic and fundamental top rock step.
- Stand up straight with your feet square with your shoulders, a little bit more than your hip width apart. Your weight should be balanced evenly between both of your feet with the majority of the weight on the balls of your feet.
- Transfer your body weight slightly to your left foot in preparation of stepping away with your right foot.
- Raise your right knee at a 90-degree angle, cross your right leg in front of the left and set your right foot down while straightening your right leg. Your legs should be crossed with the right leg straight and the left leg slightly bent to absorb the slight bit of shock from the step. Open both arms to your sides widely while stepping forward. Both movements should be performed concurrently, in rhythm with each other.
- Lift your right knee back up and return your right leg to its starting position. Close both arms back to your body as you step back. Again, these two movements should coincide rhythmically.
- Transfer your body weight slightly to your right foot. Repeat steps three and four exactly, only with the opposite leg.
- Repeat the moves as desired. You can add variety by changing the direction of your steps and varying the rhythm.
