How to Combine Moves in Break Dancing

Combining moves in break dancing gives you a chance to creatively design a unique set of your own, or even create new moves entirely. Practice and familiarity with existing moves you’ll be using is the key to successfully making good combinations.

1. Learn several different moves individually, and practice the footwork of each until you can execute them cleanly (with no slip-ups or hesitation).

2. Break up your moves into individual steps, if you haven’t already. Say each step to yourself as you do it, and know the sequences of each move individually. If the steps don’t already have names that you know of, make up names that are easy to remember (spin-squat, for instance).

3. Examine the moves to find a step in one that matches up with a starting step in another. You want to find two that not only correspond, but will also look good when blended together. If you plan to combine several moves, make sure each one has a step that matches the beginning step of the next in line.

4. Practice the transition between the two moves slowly at first. The changeover will be the hardest part to remember when you execute them more quickly. If you are combining a string of moves, add only one on at a time, and practice the sequence until you can finish it quickly and flawlessly. The better you are at the smaller sequences, the easier it will be to add each additional move. Once you put several moves together seamlessly, you’ll have created a “set.”
