How to Train for Ballroom Dancing

Training for ballroom dancing requires a commitment from both partners. Besides working on different dance steps both ballroom dance partners should try to improve their overall fitness level. Ballroom dancing is often tiring so increasing cardiovascular fitness, stamina and lower body strength can help the dance partners improve their performance.

  • Talk with your ballroom dance partner to decide on a training routine that fits both of your schedules. Determine how much time to devote each week to dancing and how often to workout to improve your fitness levels. Choose exercises for your fitness training that you can do together so you can help each other stay motivated.

  • Practice ballroom dancing as often as you can. While it is important to get physically fit, practicing your ballroom dance routine is the best way to get better. Hire a dance coach to help you train if you can afford the price or take an advanced ballroom dancing class if you like to train in a group.

  • Workout at a local gym on the days that you do not dance. Run on a treadmill to increase your cardio fitness and lift weights to improve your lower body strength. You should also do an abdominal workout at least twice a week to work on your core muscles.

  • Improve your flexibility for ballroom dance. Design a stretching routine to perform with your dance partner several times a week. Stretch at home instead of at a gym so you do not have to worry about getting distracted by other members.

  • Increase the difficulty of your ballroom dance routine once you improve your fitness level. Work with your dance coach to develop a more difficult routine or design one on your own. Practice until the steps are easy to perform and then continue to polish your routine to become a better dance pair.
