How to Donate a Power Wheelchair

Power wheelchairs are an essential item to many people who have trouble getting around on their own. These wheelchairs can often be expensive and hard for many people to obtain. Donating a power wheelchair to someone who needs it can greatly improve the quality of someone’s day-to-day life.

  1. Test out the power wheelchair that you are donating to ensure that it is in good working order before donating. Most organizations will only accept donations that are in good working order.

  2. Perform an Internet search to locate charities near you using the keywords "local charities," along with the name of the city and state where you are located.

  3. Browse through the search results to determine what charities are located in the area and write down the contact information for each charity.

  4. Visit each charity's website to determine if they accept donations of power wheel chairs as well as name and phone number of the person to contact in regards to donations.

  5. Call each charity individually to determine if they are currently taking donations at the time.

  6. Determine which charity you would like to donate the power wheelchair to and schedule a donation pick up at a time that is convenient for you.

  7. Make sure that you are home on the schedule time and date of the donation pick-up. If you are not going to be home, make sure that someone over the age of 18 is home.

  8. Ask for a tax paper from the individual who is picking up the wheelchair. They should be able to provide you with tax paperwork that will allow you to use the donation as a write-off when doing taxes.
