How to Draw a Tractor Trailer

While working with a tractor, it is often necessary to hook it to a trailer. There are different types of trailers that are designed to perform different tasks. Trailers are designed to pull behind the tractor and most have a simple hitch that is connected to the tractor’s drawbar using a steel pin. Some trailers are connected using a hydraulic hose while others have a shaft that requires chains to work with the tractor.

Instructions

  • Reverse the tractor to within a few feet of the trailer. Park and get out of the tractor and check the positioning. Make sure trailer is at the right height. Make adjustments if need be by using the air ride switch.

  • Adjust the fitting until the holes on the tractors drawbar and those on the trailer tongue are properly lined up.

  • Get back into the tractor, release the brake and reverse slowly until the draw bar gets into the trailer tongue then apply the brakes and park.

  • Get out of the tractor and insert the pin into the trailers tongue, then get back to the tractor. Release the tractors brakes and inch forward until the pin gets into the hole to the bottom of the trailers hitch.

  • Park the tractor again and get out. Insert the pin through the hole to lock the tractor and trailer.

  • Attach the hydraulic hoses and test the levers by moving the tractor.

  • Connect the hose connector to the nozzles on the tractor cab. Rotate them until they are firmly locked.

  • Start the tractor and pull forward until the wheels turn freely. Adjust the pressure gauges on both the tractor and trailer for best results.

  • Set the brakes on the tractor and the trailer. Get out and inspect both vehicles. Make sure all the tires have enough air and add some if need be.

  • Enter the tractor and start the engine. Monitor the gauges and remember you are pulling a load behind you so drive carefully.
